Animals that attack fiber optic cable and do potential damages

Fiber optic communication network is known for its advantages compared to the legacy network. Fiber optic cables are delicate as it incoroporate optical fibers made of glass. Adequate protection measures shall be taken to prevent attack from animals.

Fiber optic cable manufacturers design the cable with protection measures if required. Installation team should give enough information and feedback on the fiber optic cable route and the possible threat from animals.

Fiber optic cables can be attacked by Termites, rats, squirrels, insects, birds. Fishes may attack the underwater cables. Underground fiber optic cables are prone to attack from the rats. Rats in the tropical climate are said to be bigger in size and cause more damate to the fiber optic cable. Glass yarns provided between the inner sheath and outer sheath in one or two layers without gaps is supposed to prevent mild attacks from rats.

Glass tapes are more efficient to protect the fiber optic cables from rat bites than glass yarns. Glass yarns when applied over the stranded core or over the inner sheath may not cover fully and leaves space between the yarns giving access to the rats to the inner portions of the cable. Steel tape can prevent the rats and squirrels.
Chemical dopants can effectively keep away the rats. Chilli powder is a proven rodent repellant chemical. Squirrels attack the aerial cables when it pass through the cable route pass through the rural areas. Recently, one of the reports from Level 3 Communications say almost 17 percent of the fiber failure reasons are due to the damages caused by the squirrels.

When the animals attack fiber optic cable, whatever be the reasons, optical fibers are exposed and further attack will cause fiber break and ultimately loss of communication link. This results in huge loss of revenue and also the reputation and reliability of the network operator. Fiber break causes internet connection loss and shut down of many works and businesses sometimes to the whole country.

Some insects also destroy fiber optic cables. In Japan, one of the reported damages of fiber optic drop cables is from Cicada. Japanese cable manufacturers have developed cicada resistant fiber optic drop cables.

Threat to the fiber optic cable is not limited only from animals, but human beings also. Inadvertant errors can be understood and excused, but when somebody destroy the fiber optic cable purposely, it becomes a crime. There was a news from Singapore that one of the ex-employee of a major telecom group in Singapre was the person who cut many number of FTTH cables in Singapore. We can count such humans to the group of rodents and insects.
