Indian media reports that the leading construction company Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) has bagged an order worth US$35.2 million for the installation of fiber optic cables and related accessories and construction of infrastructure facilities in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipality. As per the contract, L&T will install 750 kilometers of optical fiber cables in the city. The municipal corporation has plans to connect civil offices, public transportation facilities such as bus stops and markets spread all over the city.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) selected L&T based on commercial and technical evaluations. L&T became the lowest bidder in the tendering process. The contracts are valued in Indian Rupees (Rs) as 255 crores.
Pimpri-Chinchwad is a city in the Western State of Maharashtra in India. The city was developed from the rural suburbs of Pune, which is known for its industrial development. Fiber optic infrastructure is an important component of the smart initiative for Indian cities, where the TRAI along with central governments has made plans since 2010 for a digital India. The recent NDA government has also made progress by continuing the efforts of previous governments in the country.
The fiber network in the municipality would serve as the backbone for connectivity and Wi-Fi spots and would be located at all marketplaces, government offices, recreation spots, and educational institutes. The tendering process was finalized in a meeting by the Smart City Board of Directors which was held on Friday morning. According to the civic officers, the process will start in the span of a month, after clearing the documentation process.
Three companies showed interest in the tendering process and after scrutinizing, the lowest bidder was L&T. For the first time, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has planned to install CCTV cameras and Wi-Fi at every important junction points in the city. As per the contract, L&T will install 270 Wi-Fi spots,50 smart kiosk,60 variable message display, and 800 smart poles at various parts in the city in a duration of one year.
The Smart City kiosk project is a mobile phone-based digital platform for residents of the industrial township through which they can interact with the civic body as well as the administration. Variable Message Display systems will share real-time basis information and guidance on traffic congestions, diversions, emergencies, programs, weather, and other important announcements.
Smart city projects combined with the nationwide BharatNet projects will contribute to higher consumption of optical fibers in India. The current annual demand for optical fibers in India is estimated to be more than 30 million. This demand will touch 50 million by 2020, experts in the industry predict.
